Pre-Surgery Evaluation | CertMedicals
The pre-operative or pre-surgery evaluation identifies potential clinical risks through systematic analysis of the history, clinical examination, and additional patient examinations. It aims to assess and correct the problems presenting a risk before surgery, improving care quality by reducing complications.
It, therefore, helps reduce surgical cancellations related to incomplete assessment. It also allows the anesthesiologist to establish the anesthetic plan that best suits the patient's condition and planned surgery.
Depending on the type of surgery, a clinician at CertMedicals will perform a pre-operative assessment to assess our general health. This will also be an opportunity for you to learn about the upcoming surgery and ask your questions.
The preoperative evaluation is all the more important as the number of people having to undergo out-patient surgery is increasing. People who need surgery are often older and have multiple conditions that require a comprehensive assessment of their condition.
Objectives of Pre-Surgery Evaluation
The objectives of the pre-operative evaluation:
- to investigate the patient's surgical condition;
- to recognize, correct or optimize associated conditions which, if neglected, could increase operative and postoperative morbidity and mortality;
- to reduce the possible risks and the pre and post-operative complications that may arise both from an anesthetic point of view and a surgical point of view
Adequate preoperative assessment is essential for quality care and aids in the proper functioning of the operating room.
At CertMedicals, we have a structured pre-operative evaluation process to improve the quality of care through better coordination of the pre-operative assessment by bringing together the care intended for clients under a single organizational unit.
The existence of our pre-operative procedure favors:
- the collection of all the relevant elements in the patient's file;
- the complete and integrated assessment of the patient's surgical, medical and anesthetic condition;
- optimal preparation of the patient for anesthesia and surgery;
- teaching the patient so that they can participate in post-operative care;
- the development of a care plan in anticipation of the return home;
- communication of the necessary information through explanatory leaflets or other mediums relating to anesthesia, surgery and internal hospital procedures
This organizational model helps reduce the number of last-minute cancellations resulting from an incomplete clinical assessment.
At CertMedicals, we have also developed pre-operative assessment protocols and post-operative care protocols for certain procedures, developed according to the patient's age and the surgical intervention.
Parameters to Evaluate
The parameters to be evaluated depending on the operative risk, which depends on certain factors, including:
- the disease justifying the intervention;
- the surgical procedure relating to the type of intervention, as well as the duration and impact of this procedure on the patient's physiology (intracavitary surgery or not);
- the nature and severity of the ailments or associated problems (functional capacity, nutritional state, psychological state, etc.)
Cardiac, pulmonary, metabolic, neurological and hematological functions must be evaluated and optimized in the preoperative period. The results of this assessment could, in some cases, lead a physician to recommend postponement of surgery or to reassess the appropriateness of performing the proposed surgery.
Pre-Operative Evaluation Steps
The pre-surgery evaluation and preparation may include, chronologically, the following steps:
- History and physical examination of the patient
- Relevant additional examinations
- Consultations in specialties or in general medicine to assess, as the case may be, a particular condition or the general condition of the patient
- The evaluation carried out by the anesthesiologist before the operation
